NAMES IN FRAME TO REPLACE CONTE IN THE SPURS DUGOUT

ANTONIO CONTE remains on the brink of being sacked by Tottenham, with chairman Daniel Levy still thrashing out the terms of the Italian’s exit and deciding on succession plans this morning.

The most likely scenario, as it stands, is for first-team coach Ryan Mason to take charge on a caretaker basis until the end of the season, with Levy’s 12th permanent manager starting in the summer. Standard Sport assesses the current runners and riders to succeed Conte:

Mauricio Pochettino

THE Argentine is the clear choice of fans and interested in returning to the club where he spent five-and-a-half exhilarating seasons. Pochettino is a free agent following his sacking by Paris Saint-Germain and ticks many boxes, including progressive football and a history of promoting youth. But they say you should never go back in football, and the 51-year-old would be returning to a different club as a different manager. A reunion would require Levy to swallow his pride and probably need managing director Fabio Paratici out of the way, amid a sense there is not room for both at the club.
