Officers seized the dogs after the victim, in her fifties, was savaged inside the house in Hornchurch.

The "horrific" attack happened at about 1pm yesterday and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbours said the legally-registered dogs were taken away from the property in Cornwall Close after two of the woman's sons found her with fatal injuries.

One neighbour told the Standard: "Two of her boys returned home and found she had been attacked. It was too late for her...imagine coming home to that. It's a tragedy, they were too late.

"I've seen one of her dogs before and I thought to myself, That's a lump'. It looked a bit scary, I don't know why people have these dogs." They added: "We didn't see the dogs much but you could hear them barking.

They were very loud but there had been no complaints, or police there or anything like that before that I'm aware of.
