Police officer injured as Just Stop Oil protest leads to lorry crash on M25

Essex Police said the officer was hurt in a “collision involving two lorries and a police motorbike” after a “rolling roadblock” had been set up to deal with a protester who had gone onto the motorway.

A witness said the accident, between junctions 26 and 27, happened when the officer’s motorbike swerved to try to intercept a female protester climbing a pole.

Images of the scene showed two large lorries side by side with their cabs crashed together. The police motorbike was nearby lying on the hard shoulder.

Essex Police said the officer had escaped serious injury but Chief Superintendent Simon Anslow said his thoughts remained “with them and their family” in a sign of the potential severity of the accident.

A witness told MailOnline that they had been “driving along at around 6.21am when a woman started climbing a concrete pole”.

“A police officer on a motorbike swerved to try to stop her and collided with a lorry, which then crashed into another lorry. They arrested the woman before she could get on to the gantry.”

The road was closed and two protesters arrested for causing a public nuisuance.
