There can never be justice, says murdered Reeva's mother as Pistorius freed from jail

It is understood he was freed from the Atteridgeville Correctional Center in the South African capital, Pretoria, in the early hours.

Pistorius — dubbed “Blade Runner” for his carbon-fiber prosthetic legs — shot 29-year-old model Ms Steenkamp dead through a locked bathroom door on Valentine’s Day in 2013. He claimed he mistook her for an intruder when he fired four shots into the bathroom at his Pretoria home, and he launched multiple appeals against his conviction on that basis.

Pistorius, now 37, has spent about eight and a half years in jail as well as seven months under home arrest before he was sentenced for murder. A parole board in November decided he could be freed after completing more than half his sentence.

At the table What a mercurial, bewildering change of course

Though plagued by doubt as much as anyone — more? Less? Oh god, now I'm not sure — I tend to think none of us are ever-fixèd marks, bound to the same mistakes and impotent to change. Who we are and what we do might vary with the weather, or a few pints. A capricious bent is nothing to be ashamed of.
