The former president flew into Miami last night on a private jet as his supporters gathered outside a nearby golf club where he spent the night.
Mr Trump, the front-runner for the Republican nomination in the 2024 presidential election, was scheduled to appear in a Miami federal courthouse this afternoon.
He is accused of illegally keeping thousands of US classified documents and lying to officials who tried to recover them. It is the first time a former president has been charged with a federal offence.
As he arrived at the golf club the 76-year-old greeted a smattering of guests at the BLT Prime restaurant with a thumbs-up, and even stopped to pose for a photo with a group of men enjoying the happy hour.
One patron seated at the bar shouted “With you all the way!” according to the BBC. “Thank you very much,” Mr Trump replied, before security men escorted him to the dining area.
