MILLIONS of households in Britain must be ready for the ongoing "pain" of high energy bills so Vladimir Putin is defeated in Ukraine and threats from Russia and China are defused, a minister warned today.
James Heappey admitted that a "really expensive winter lies ahead" for many UK families and stressed the new Prime Minister's "first priority" would be a bigger support package.
Speaking as Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelensky, pictured top, marked the country's independence from the Soviet Union, the armed forces minister warned that bowing to Mr Putin's aggression, including his cutting back on the gas flow to Europe, would ultimately be "catastrophic" for the West's security. Households across Britain are seeing their energy bills rocket, as the price of gas has soared following the order by Mr Putin, left, to invade Ukraine six months ago.
Regulator Ofgem will set the energy cap on Friday, and it is expected to jump from £1,971 to more than £3,500 in October, and possibly above £5,800 in April. The spiralling energy bills are fuelling inflation with forecasts that it could hit 18.6 per cent in January.
