THE HONDA STORY has been as much of successes as of missed opportunities. The carmaker has become the biggest exporter to Japan – having sold more than 30,000 units of its Elevate SUV there (called the WR-V) – but, in India, sales are dropping.
Year-on-year sales have fallen 17% – from 76,387 units in January-November 2023 to just 63,047 units during the same period this year. The much-awaited made-for-India SUV, the Elevate launched in September 2023, sold 22,595 units in the first five months, but in the 11 months of this year, sales have almost halved (25,322 units).
Sales of the City dropped from 19,104 units in January-November 2023 to just 10,743 units this year, and those of the Amaze from 38,877 to just 26,982 units.
It has been a rollercoaster of a ride, but as I take the wheel of the new Amaze with Takuya Tsumura – the young president & CEO of Honda Cars India – he tells me that the carmaker is on the right track.
