The target, an increase of 50% over the previous year, is despite the fact that the awards in the current year so far have been less than 3,000 km.
In the first quarter, only 95 km of highways was awarded, but after that the awards gained momentum averaging over 600 km a month.
Further improvements were reported in November, when 773 km of highways was awarded.
Typically most of the project awards are done in March. Of the 8,581 km awarded in FY24, 3,709 km was awarded in the last month of the financial year.
The award figure of national highways in 2023-24 was against the target of 13,290 km. The figure slipped as the government stopped fresh contracts for newer highways under the umbrella highway development programme Bharatmala.
