AUTHORITIES IN GUJARAT Monday began evacuating people from vulnerable areas and closed schools and ports in coastal districts as weather conditions intensified ahead of the landfall of Cyclone Biparjoy, leading to the death of one person in Rajkot.
Meanwhile, in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting, which was also attended by home minister Amit Shah, to review the preparedness of central and Gujarat government agencies.
The cyclone is expected to cross Saurashtra and Kutch between Mandvi in Gujarat and Karachi in Pakistan near Jakhau Port (Gujarat) by Thursday noon in the form of a "very severe cyclonic storm with maximum sustained wind speed of 125-135 kmph gusting to 145 kmph", the India Meteorological Department said at the meeting.
In Rajkot, Varsha Bavaliya, a resident of Chhasiya village, was killed and husband Bhavesh was seriously injured after a tree fell on them while they were going towards Bhadla village on a motorbike.
