Legal battles, controversies dented Subrata Roy's ambitions

FROM KNOCKING ON doors to sell salted snacks and driving a Lambretta scooter in the by-lanes of Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh to creating Sahara India Parivar, the life of its founder Subrata Roy, as per his admirers, was worthy of a Bollywood movie.

Legal battles, controversies dented Subrata Roy's ambitions

However, the only movie or web series made on him was 'Bad Boy Billionaires' by Netflix, which chronicled the life of three businessmen accused of corruption, which shows that his success came at the cost of several controversies, unfinished legal battles and spending time in prison. Ironically, despite approaching the court, he was unsuccessful in blocking the release of Netflix docuseries.

Roy breathed his last on Wednesday after a prolonged illness, leaving behind several unfinished legal battles and a huge business empire which employed thousands of people at its peak.

Sahara Group, with its presence in real estate, financial services, media and hospitality, was named by Time magazine as the second-largest employer in India in 2004 employing ₹1.2 million individuals.

The meteoric rise of Subrata Roy had a humble beginning. Roy, who was born in Araria, Bihar on June 10, 1948, tried his luck with selling snacks with the brand name 'Jaya Products', which was named after his younger brother. The venture proved unsuccessful after which he started Sahara Finance, a chit fund company, in 1978 with a initial capital of ₹2,000.
