On January 6, Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan released draft norms for feedback from stakeholders till February 5. The draft norms—which seek to revise the 2018 UGC regulations on faculty appointments and promotions in universities—have fixed the role of the chancellor as chairperson of a three-member search-cum-selection panel and opened the V-C's positions to non-academics, too. Both these provisions evoked sharp criticism from leaders of opposition-ruled states such as Tamil Nadu and Kerala, and academicians.
