The West Bengal government on Monday ordered the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to probe the January 10 death of a woman at Midnapore Medical College and Hospital due to suspected effects of a lactate solution supplied by a local private company.

After receiving the 13-member inquiry team's report, state chief secretary Manoj Pant said: "Serious negligence on the part of those who handled the operation has been detected by the inquiry team. The surgery was conducted by trainee doctors in violation of protocol which requires the presence of senior doctors."
