NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police have detained nearly 4,000 people from around the Narela DDA housing in the past month under the NDPS Act, Arms Act, Delhi Police Act, gambling and other criminal acts.The arrests come after lieutenant governor (LG) VK Saxena, earlier this month, issued directives to enhance safety measures for residents. The directives from the LG followed an HT report, dated November 25 -- "Desolation in a Ghost town in Delhi" -- highlighting the poor occupancy in Narela's mass housing projects due to an array of issues.According to the data, 3,951 people have been detained in the joint campaign led by police officers from Narela and along with Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF). As many as 2,075 persons were held under Section 65 (persons bound to comply with the reasonable directions of police officer) of the Delhi Police Act, 90 for public drinking, and others for consuming drugs, gambling, carrying illicit liquor and land grabbing, among other illicit activities.DCP (outernorth police district) Nidhin Valsan said, "Regular intensive patrolling with CAPF and beat staff is done around DDA flats. We have initiated combing operations in JJ colonies adjacent to the flats. We are taking action against persons breaking the law."
