Polyvalent antivenom ineffective for poison of Thar snakes: Study

The polyvalent antivenom used to treat snakebites of Thar desert snakes is ineffective, with a mortality rate of 8.6% and patients suffering from severe systemic bleeding, delayed clotting disorders, and prolonged hospital stays, study showed.

JODHPUR:

A study conducted by AIIMS Jodhpur between 2019 and 2024 analysed 210 snakebite cases, of which 105 were confirmed to be from Sochurek's saw-scaled viper (Echis carinatus sochureki). According to the study, 68.4% patients did not respond to the currently available Indian polyvalent antivenom, despite receiving high doses.
