LUCKNOW: The year 2024 saw the Supreme Court pass two separate but key rulings with far-reaching implications for Uttar Pradesh and the rest of the country. First, the top court halted bulldozer action amid rising public concern over demolitions allegedly targeting specific groups.
Second, the apex restrained courts across the country from admitting fresh suits or passing orders in pending ones seeking a survey of mosques to determine whether temples lie beneath them.
Through an interim order on September 17, the Supreme Court halted bulldozer action in Uttar Pradesh and the rest of the country.
The court extended its interim order on October 1, 2024, asking authorities to stop demolition drives until further orders were received.
In an application in September 2024, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Adequate Housing told the court that 'punitive and arbitrary' demolition of homes is an 'aggravated form of human rights violation'.
