B'desh to investigate 2009 mutiny massacre
Hindustan Times Mumbai|December 27, 2024
Bangladesh, on Thursday, ordered a commission to investigate a failed 2009 army mutiny and subsequent crackdown, including the role of alleged "foreign" backers, the inquiry chief said.

DHAKA:

The violent mutiny sent shockwaves through the South Asian nation, culminating in the army swiftly crushing the mutineers, resulting in the arrest and death sentences of dozens.

A previous official investigation into the rebellion, which left numerous soldiers dead, pointed to years of pent-up frustration among ordinary soldiers, who felt their persistent appeals for pay raises and improved treatment had been disregarded by the government.

However, this investigation was conducted during the tenure of Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted as prime minister in a revolution this past August, forcing her to flee to her longtime ally, India.
