IMPHAL: The unrest occurred amid an ongoing indefinite economic blockade and a 24-hour total shutdown called by Kuki organisations to protest the alleged baton charge on women by security forces on December 31 in Saibol village. On Friday evening, protesters threw stones and other projectiles at the office of SP M Prabhakar to vent their anger over the continued deployment of central forces.An official said that vehicles of district police kept within the compound of the SP's office have been damaged in the attack, while Prabhakar is undergoing treatment for an injury on the forehead."Kangpokpi district SP Manoj Prabhakar was injured and some vehicles were damaged. He has received medical treatment and is fine now and presently leading the joint security forces in tackling the situation," state police said.Last week, security forces conducted operations at the village and its peripheral areas following gunfights between groups that led to injuries to four people.Kangpokpi district based Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU) imposed indefinite economic blockade along the critical transportation route of National Highway 2. COTU spokesperson Ng Lun Kipgen said, "Some of the angry protesters pelted stones at the SP office. We heard about this and have urged locals not to indulge in violence."
