HARIDWAR: The seat has been reserved for OBC woman candidates this time around.
Since the elevation of Haridwar municipal council to municipal corporation in 2012, BJP and Congress have won each of the two elections held since then for the mayoral post.
In 2013, BJP candidate Manoj Garg won Congress candidate Swami Rishishwaranand by 17,147 votes margin while the Congress clinched the seat in 2019 with party candidate Anita Sharma winning against BJP candidate Anu Kakkad. This year, the BJP has fielded Kiran Jaisal while the Congress has fielded Amresh Devi for the municipal corporation mayor seat.
The order for OBC women reservation status in Haridwar municipal corporation was issued by the state government on December 23.
