DEHRADUN/PITHORAGARH: Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) has recommended disciplinary action against party's Pithoragarh MLA Mayukh Mahar for supporting Independent mayoral candidate from Pithoragarh Monika Mahar. The Congress has fielded Anju Lunthi for the Pithoragarh mayoral seat, people aware of the matter said on Wednesday.
"We have written to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) for action against Pithoragarh MLA Mayukh Mahar for going against the party lines and supporting the Independent candidate. We will comply with the directions issued by the AICC," said Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee president Karan Mahara.
Mahara added that a few party leaders, who were discontent with the party for not securing a Congress ticket for the civic polls and filed nominations as Independent candidates, have been successfully persuaded to extend support to the Congress candidate.
The voting for 11 municipal corporations, 43 municipal councils and 46 nagar panchayats will take place on January 23, and the counting of votes will be held on January 25.
