The assessment, titled "Climate India 2024: An Assessment of Extreme Weather Events," reveals that 255 out of 274 days were marked by extreme weather phenomena, including heat and cold waves, cyclones, lightning, heavy rainfall, floods, and landslides. The findings come at a crucial time, just days before the UN Climate Meeting (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The human and economic toll has been severe. The report documents 3,238 deaths, damage to 3.2 million hectares of crops, destruction of 235,862 houses and buildings, and the loss of 9,457 livestock. These figures represent a significant increase from 2023, when the first nine months saw extreme weather on 235 of 273 days, resulting in 2,923 deaths, 1.84 million hectares of crop damage, 80,293 damaged houses, and 92,519 animal deaths.
