Delhi HC junks plea seeking nod for Chhath Puja at Yamuna ghat
Hindustan Times|November 07, 2024
The Delhi high court on Wednesday junked a plea seeking permission to perform Chhath Puja on a Yamuna river ghat in Geeta Colony, stressing that it cannot allow people to go into a river "contaminated" with "untreated sewage" in the interest of public health.

A bench of chief justice Manmohan and justice Tushar Rao Gedela said that allowing devotees to take a dip in the "highly polluted" river would be harmful for them.

The court's remarks come amid an ongoing crisis of toxic foam floating on the Yamuna due to high ammonia levels, which has snowballed into a political blame game. The issue springs up every year ahead and during Chhath Puja as political parties spar over fixing accountability for failure to keep the river clean.
