A UKRAINIAN drone attack on Vladimir Putin's nuclear airbase has left three people dead, Moscow has claimed.

Air defences shot down the drone near the Engels base in southern Russia but the defence ministry said falling debris killed three technical staff.

Loud blasts were heard at the base, used by Tu-95 and Tu-160 nuclear missile-carrying planes.

Earlier this month, Russia accused Ukraine of a similar attack on the airfield, home to bombers that have carried out missile attacks on Ukraine.

The base lies about 310 miles north-east of Ukraine's border.
