David Coleman was yesterday discussing the assault on a schoolboy in Navan, Co Meath, and said: "This particular attack was really horrific.
"There were so many young people who seemed to pile on and continue the attack on that one young person.
"When we are talking to our kids about someone who might try to hit them or kick or trip them, anything that we might call physical bullying, I'd always suggest that we give our kids permission to hit back.
"They need to feel allowed to respond to an aggressive or violent attack by trying to react appropriately.
"That is difficult in some situations because children often freeze.

"If we don't give them permission that it's actually OK to defend yourself, that leaves them at a disadvantage."
Dr Coleman attracted controversy in 2016 when he said on RTE Radio 1 that children should hit back in the playground.
He repeated the claims on RTE yesterday and added: "If someone is going to physically attack you, I think it is OK to feel that you at least have the option of fighting back."
Meanwhile, Education Minister Norma Foley urged people to stop sharing online a video of the assault which has already been forwarded five million times.
She added that it should never have been posted online because it "adds to the horror" of the attack.
