THE parents of an Irish girl who was left with facial scars in a fire in Qatar have criticised a court for slashing her compensation.
Elizabeth Soffe was a six-month-old baby when her cot caught fire in 2014, leaving her with third-degree burns to 60% of her body.
Her civil engineer dad Liam, 44, who was working in Qatar to get it ready for last year’s World Cup, and nurse mum Sinead, 44, pursued a six-year legal case for damages.
The courts heard a fire expert’s testimony that the blaze had been caused by faulty electrics or poor maintenance of an air conditioning unit.
A QAR15million (€3.8million) sum was awarded for Elizabeth’s lifelong care, but the property company appealed and the figure was cut to €1.8million.
