Housing crisis is moving right way to get first homé

HOUSING Minister Darragh O’Brien said “things are changing” for young people who want to buy a home or move out of their family home.

He added “everything is trending in the right direction” over the Government’s response to the crisis, citing an increase in planning permissions and completed homes compared to last year.

It comes after figures released by Eurostat, the EU’s statistics body, indicated around 66% of adults aged 25 to 29 live with their parents. The average in the bloc is 42%.

Mr O’Brien admitted it was “challenging” for young people and indicated the €500 a year tax credit for renters would be increased in the Budget.

He said around 235,000 renters have taken up the tax credit so far.
