AN Irish tourist has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman was strangled.

Police confirmed the suspect, who is in his 30s, was detained on Sunday night after the body was found in a hotel in Salou, 70 miles south of Barcelona.

The man, who was discovered beside the 36-year-old victim, was taken to hospital for treatment to a wrist wound.

He was later transferred to a police station after being given the all-clear by doctors.

A police spokesman had indicated the man would be handed over to an investigating magistrate for questioning "in the coming hours".

But a colleague later confirmed he could be held by police for a maximum of 72 hours.
