THE US National Guard airman accused of one of the Pentagon's biggest ever leaks appeared in court yesterday.
Jack Teixeira, 21, faced charges relating to the transmission of highly-classified defence information at a Boston hearing.
Under the username "Jack the Dipper", investigators believe he led a private online chat group called "Thug Shaker Central" where he shared photos of highly classified documents about the invasion of Ukraine.
If found guilty, he faces up to 10 years in prison. He arrived in court, shackled and handcuffed in beige jail clothes. Documents filed by the US government said Teixeira, an IT specialist in the intelligence wing of the Massachusetts National Guard, held top security clearance. FBI Special Agent Patrick Lueckenhoff told the court he would have "signed a lifetime binding non-disclosure agreement". Accounts of chat members suggest he was motivated more by bravado than ideology.
Old school friends said he was a "loner" fascinated with guns and war.&nbsp;
Magistrate Judge David Hennessy ordered Teixeira to stay behind bars, pending a hearing next Wednesday.
