No new recruits hired so far this year as fleet faces staffing crisis

THE Irish Navy only hired 28 new recruits last year and has managed none so far in 2023, Defence Minister Micheal Martin revealed.

At the end of February there were 767 full time Navy staff - 327 short of what they need to man and run the fleet.

The admission comes in the wake of severe public criticism of the Navy's failure to get a ship out last week to monitor Russian vessels acting suspiciously in the Irish Exclusive Economic Zone off the west coast. The failure was caused by a staff shortage.
