THE number of nurses who say inadequate staffing is putting patient safety at risk "needs to be a wakeup call", the Health Minister has heard

Karen McGowan, president of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation, told the final day of its annual conference released yesterday the hospital system "sleep-walked into a summer trolley crisis".

Figures yesterday showed 551 people were waiting for a bed in Irish hospitals.
