Politics wide awake in city that never sleeps

GOOD morning from New York, the city that never sleeps.

Politics wide awake in city that never sleeps

The news here is bad for President Joe Biden, the proud Irishman in the White House, who has been a great supporter of Ireland and the Good Friday Agreement.

America, like many people in our country, is angry.

Angry at rising food costs, angry at rising fuel costs, angry at inflation, angry at stagnant wages and people are genuinely fearful of losing their jobs.

Unemployment is at a record low 3.5% but the American people fear a recession is coming and rightly or wrongly Biden is being blamed.

We all know the feeling. You only had to look at Twitter and Stripe in Dublin last Friday where hundreds of people were told their jobs were at risk and in the Twitter case, staff locked out of the office “for security reasons” until their future is decided.

New Twitter owner Elon Musk is wielding the axe but it just shows Ireland’s vulnerability to the tech sector after an astonishing 10 years of growth.

The mid-term elections will be held here today – and trust me Biden and the Democrats are going to take a kicking.
