"Some men carry out extreme acts of harm on themselves." They said many Mountjoy prisoners have mental health problems, but the conditions&nbsp;aren't suitable for them in the jail.
The report added: "One mentally sick man, for example, has been on a list for over a year to the Central Mental Hospital." The report for Wheatfield Prison in Dublin said people who are mentally ill should be hospitalised, not criminalised.
It's a point shared by the chaplain in the Dochas Women's&nbsp;Prison in Dublin. The study said: "Locking up the mentally ill is business as usual."
The chaplain in Cloverhill Prison in Dublin added: "Year after year, chaplains along with other stakeholders, have highlighted this issue and the ongoing incarceration of those who are psychiatrically unwell remains a matter of huge concern."
