But it's understood that Mr Reid's decision had been made in advance of this and it was not what&nbsp;specifically prompted his decision.
The Irish Mirror asked the HSE for details of any severance payments Mr Reid could receive in December and they revealed that there will be none.
A spokeswoman said: "Paul Reid has informed the Chairman of the HSE and the Minister of Health that he intends to step down from his position as CEO of the HSE in December 2022.
"Mr Reid will serve the required notice period of three months outlined in his contract of employment and no additional exit package or severance arrangement will apply on his resignation."
