DIEGO HAS HAND IN IT

GARY LINEKER reckons he played in “probably the most memorable game of all time”.

That was the 1986 World Cup quarter-final, remembered for Diego Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ goal and another named ‘Goal of the Century’ by FIFA in 2002.

The final was memorable, too.

There were two goals in the last nine minutes when Argentina met West Germany in front of 114,600 fans in Mexico City and, although he did not score, Maradona played his part in the late drama.

Argentina reached their second final – they had lifted the trophy eight years earlier – by seeing off Belgium 2-0 in the semi-finals.
