Backlash over low-traffic zone...but some say results 'absolutely lovely'

'I feel like I'm trapped in my own road'

COUNCIL bosses say a low-traffic zone trial in Withington is 'in its early stages' and that it is yet to be decided if it will become permanent.

They have also reassured people that emergency service vehicles will still be able to access streets.

It follows a backlash from some residents in the south Manchester neighbourhood to the new traffic calming measures.

Earlier this month plant filters were installed on a number of streets across Withington. It is part of a six-month 'Active Neighbourhood' trial aimed at promoting walking and cycling and preventing drivers from using residential streets as cut-throughs.

It followed concerns raised about road safety around the Parsonage Road Area.

However, since their introduction, there have been calls for them to be removed.

One resident told the Manchester Evening News: "I feel like I'm trapped in my own road." Another said it was "making it an absolute nightmare getting around".
