Hodgkinson put in a dominant performance to win Team GB’s first athletics gold medal of the Olympic Games. She stormed to the line in a final sprint, finishing in a time of one minute 56.72 seconds.
She is the first British woman to win the event since Dame Kelly Homes’ gold in Athens in 2004. And it is the end of a 12-year long drought for a female track and field champion, with Team GB’s last gold in that category coming thanks to Jessica Ennis-Hill at London 2012.
