ANDY Burnham was re-elected as Greater Manchester’s mayor earlier this month after winning 63.4 per cent of the vote.
He finished in first place, beating five other candidates on the ballot by a comfortable majority, in every part of Greater Manchester - except for one.
On the outskirts of Oldham town centre, Werneth has been safe Labour territory for over a decade. But something changed this year.
Two Labour councillors - including one for Werneth who was up for reelection - quit the party over its stance on the war in Gaza. In the end, Oldham councillor Nyla Ibrahim held onto her seat after standing an independent.
The Labour Party lost several council seats across Greater Manchester in the local elections, with the conflict in the Middle East said to be a decisive factor in some areas. But in all of the other council wards the party lost on May 2, Mr Burnham still came out on top.
