As Edgar Allen Poe poem The Raven turns 180, we take a look at other winged wonders that have made it big

BIRDS OF A FEATHER...

EDGAR Allen Poe's iconic poem The Raven is 180 years old this month. The gothic work, published in January 1845, is about a man visited by a mysterious raven. He asks it questions and it replies with just one word: 'Nevermore.'

It is said that, shortly after its publication, children would follow Poe along the street flapping their arms and cawing. The author would turn around quickly, shout "Never- more!" and the children would run away, laughing.

You may not have read the poem, but references to The Raven can be found in a whole range of books, films and TV shows: from Donald Duck, Teen Titans and Garfield to The Simpsons, Batman and Wednesday.

Birds have inspired many writers and artists over the years.
