A NEW north Manchester homeless shelter WILL open after a long battle – but only as councillors asked it was NOT used for Andy Burnham’s flagship homeless scheme.
The mayor launched ‘A Bed Every Night’ scheme shortly after his election in 2017. It gives people at risk of sleeping rough a place to sleep on an emergency basis, and Mr Burnham’s office says it has ‘recorded a significantly lower increase in rough sleeping than other parts of England’, in part thanks to the project.
