WHEN I first arrived at Little Woolden Moss near Salford, it was quiet with not much sign of life.
But my first impression of the peatlands was about to be proven very wrong.
When I first signed up to volunteer for the Lancashire Wildlife Trust monitoring dip wells on peatland sites, I had very little knowledge of these amazing habitats. I'd briefly heard about peatlands on the news, and I knew that it would be a great chance for me to help the trust out whilst also learning along the way.
When you arrive at Little Woolden Moss, the damage caused by peat extraction is on full display. The site had been devastated and drained of water, with the leftover landscape of exposed peat emitting large amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere.
