RESIDENTS have reacted to their town’s new bus station – describing the £135million project as “absolutely amazing”.
Stockport Interchange began operating yesterday following three years of work.
The project, which comes as part of a major £1billion investment into the town, has been delivered by Transport for Greater Manchester, Stockport Council, and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority.
The transport facility boasts 18 bus stands with capacity for 164 departures an hour and is accessible from Mersey Square, Swaine Street and Daw Bank.
From today there will also be access to the interchange from the new rooftop park via both lifts and stairs.
Brenda Wain, from Cheadle Hulme, made a trip down to the town centre today to check out the new facility.
“I think it’s brilliant,” the 84-year-old told the M.E.N. “I’ve lived in Stockport all my life and it’s nice to see what’s happening. I used to stand under the arches years ago when I was a teen and I’m 84 now. We used to wait for the buses under the arches. It’s all changed now. It’s brilliant.”
