THE father of one of the two police officers murdered by Dale Cregan has issued a warning after the government signalled it would hand judges new powers to force criminals to attend sentencing hearings.
Bryn Hughes spent 25 years working as a prison officer until his daughter Nicola was killed in a gun-and-grenade attack in Mottram-in Langdendale, Tameside, in September 2012.
Cregan, then a fugitive having murdered two gangland rivals, lured police to a house with a false report of a burglary. He killed Pcs Nicola Hughes, 23, from Saddleworth, and Fiona Bone, 32, from Sale, in cold blood as they approached the door.
Yesterday Mr Hughes sounded a note of caution after the government signalled new powers for judges to force criminals to attend sentencing hearings.
