Peat of the action

LOOKING out over the boggy peat- lands of Greater Manchester, you are likely to spot some incredible wildlife - some common, some rare, but all of them are certainly spectacular.

Not many people will be aware of the wondrous birds, plants and mammals that can be spotted just on the outskirts of the urban landscape. Among the houses and farmland, lie pockets of surviving peatland habitats, locally known as mosslands; these areas are wildlife havens for the species that depend on them.

Our Wildlife Trust protects and restores peatland habitats across the North West and there have been some lovely wildlife sightings over the past months.

One of the most notable species that can be spotted is the marsh harrier, a large bird of prey that soars over the reserves, flying low to swoop down and catch unsuspecting small birds and mammals.

In the 19th century, the marsh har- rier became completely extinct in the UK due to persecution, but in 1971 a single breeding pair in Suffolk led to the successful reintroduction and popula- tion growth of this spectacular bird. Habitat restoration and protection has meant the marsh harrier has been able to roam up to Manchester and have benefited from the restoration of the peatland habitats in the area.
