The drama unfolded at the iconic Midland Hotel in the city centre shortly before 4am.
The alarm was raised after a fire broke out at one of the entrances.
Greater Manchester Fire Service (GMFRS) said the fire involved a doorway and trellis.
Five fire engines attended and crews were on the scene for more than an hour and a half.
The Grade II-listed building was built at the turn of the 20th century for a cost of £1m, the equivalent of about £120m in today's money, opening in 1903.
