Quiet man Sir Keir was criticised on a number of occasions, by his own supporters as well as by Tories, during the increasingly fractious discussions in the run-up to the election, as being lacking in charisma.
Well, all politicians have their own style of putting over their aims and perhaps we have had quite enough of charisma, with the likes of Boris Johnson getting his own way with disastrous effects on our country which will be with us for a long time.
Keir Starmer has made it clear, to those who care to hear, that he will not be content merely to stabilise the economy and hold our own as a nation of significance in the world order but he is determined to make our country a fairer place for all who live here.
This is an enormous job and one which will require a great deal of skill as a ‘people person’ willing to see the other person’s point of view and to be prepared to move his own position in order to produce a fair result.
Balancing the books and working towards a fairer society should not deter him from immediate and forceful plans to deal with the elephant in the room – global warming. This is not something to be put aside until other problems in society have been fully dealt with. Sir Keir will have to convince the general population of the need for changes as well as the fuel giants and this will have to be put in hand as a matter of urgency.
The new Prime Minister will have the support of a thumping majority in Parliament as well as the support of smaller parties on this particular issue, so it is up to him to make full use of the skills of the best scientists, his power as the nation’s leader and his own persuasive talents to ensure that our country is at the forefront of what must be an international struggle for survival.
