The Janata Dal (United), with 12 Lok Sabha MPs in its kitty, which supports the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre held its national executive meeting here on Saturday, with party supremo and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar resolving to push for a special package for the state.
With Nitish Kumar chairing the meeting, key decisions and demands emerged from the meeting, which was attended by all party MPs, including Union ministers and JD(U) leaders. Sanjay Jha, the party's Rajya Sabha MP, was elected as the JD(U) working president.
The party resolved to urge the Centre to give special category status or special package for Bihar, a longstanding demand, from the Central government. The demand was reiterated in the political proposal presented during the meeting.
Bihar Cabinet passed a resolution last year demanding special status for the state. Bihar's politicians, including Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, have long voiced demand for special category status, citing the state's economic backwardness.
Achieving this status would boost the state's share of tax revenues from the Centre. The demand assumes significance as the JD(U) played a vital role in the formation of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government after general elections earlier this month.
The party's national executive meeting flagged price rise and unemployment as "burning issues", as its political resolution expressed confidence that the NDA government would take more effective steps to handle them.
