Champai Soren quits as Jharkhand CM, Hemant Soren stakes claim to form govt

In a dramatic turn of events, Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren resigned on Wednesday, paving the way for Hemant Soren, who is currently out on bail in a money laundering case, to stake his claim to form the government. This development comes after leaders of the JMM-led alliance in the state unanimously elected Hemant Soren as the legislature party leader.

Champai Soren, who assumed office as the 12th Chief Minister of Jharkhand on February 2 following Hemant Soren’s arrest, tendered his resignation to Governor CP Radhakrishnan at Raj Bhavan. The resignation was submitted in the presence of the JMM executive president, marking the culmination of a day filled with political speculation.

Hemant Soren’s claim to form the government has been accepted, and the swearing-in ceremony is expected to take place soon. If sworn in, Hemant Soren will become the 13th Chief Minister of Jharkhand, a state that was carved out of Bihar on November 15, 2000. According to Congress MLA Banna Gupta, Raj Bhavan will announce the swearing-in time by 11 am on Thursday.
