NEW DELHI: Over 14 years after the Supreme Court framed comprehensive guidelines to prevent accidents involving abandoned borewells, the persistence of such incidents underscores glaring gaps in enforcement and public awareness of the court's order. The issue has once again come into sharp focus following a series of recent tragedies and desperate rescue operations.
In one of the most recent cases, a three-year-old girl named Chetna fell into a 150-foot-deep borewell in Rajasthan's Kotputli-Behror district. Rescue operations led by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are still underway at the time of filing this report.
Earlier this month, on December 9, another tragic incident unfolded in Rajasthan's Dausa district. Five-year-old Aryan fell into a 150-foot-deep borewell while playing. After a grueling 55-hour rescue operation, Aryan was pulled out unconscious and declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.
