AT 18, GUKESH SHATTERS KASPAROV'S RECORD AND DETHRONES DING LIREN TO BECOME THE YOUNGEST WORLD CHESS CHAMPION
Gukesh checkmates chess history

NEW DELHI/SINGAPORE: In a historic achievement, Grandmaster D Gukesh on Thursday became the youngest world chess champion at 18, dethroning defending champion Ding Liren in a nerve-wracking showdown. Gukesh's triumph not only broke Garry Kasparov's long-standing record as the youngest champion since 1985 but also marked a new chapter in India's chess dominance.

Taking forward the remarkable legacy of Viswanathan Anand, Gukesh is now the second Indian to claim the prestigious title. Anand, who won the world championship five times, played a crucial role in mentoring the prodigious talent through his chess academy in Chennai.

"I was dreaming of this moment for the last 10 years. I am happy that I turned my dream into reality," an elated yet composed Gukesh said after his historic win.

The championship match saw Gukesh secure the requisite 7.5 points against Ding Liren's 6.5. The decisive 14th classical game seemed destined for a draw for much of its duration, but a lapse in concentration by Liren allowed Gukesh to press on. The 58-move game ended in victory for Gukesh, earning him the championship title and a staggering $1.3 million (approximately Rs 11.03 crore) from the $2.5 million prize pool.
