In a significant diplomatic development, India announced on Friday that External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will travel to Pakistan to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of Government meeting scheduled for mid-October. This marks the first visit by an Indian foreign minister to Pakistan in nearly nine years, despite continuing tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
The announcement was made by External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal during his weekly media briefing. "The external affairs minister will lead our delegation to Pakistan to participate in the SCO summit which will be held in Islamabad on October 15 and 16," Jaiswal stated, stressing that the visit is strictly limited to attending the SCO summit.
