In a significant blow to unsuccessful NEET-UG 2024 aspirants, the Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed the pleas seeking the cancellation and re-test of the controversy-ridden exam, stating there was no evidence to conclude it was compromised due to a “systemic breach” of its integrity.
The interim verdict, to be followed by a detailed and reasoned order, bolstered the embattled NDA government and the National Testing Agency (NTA), both under intense scrutiny and facing protests over allegations of large-scale malpractices such as question paper leaks, fraud, and impersonation in the exam held on May 5.
Over 2.3 million students participated in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance TestUndergraduate (NEET-UG) 2024 for admissions to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other related courses.
A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra concluded the four-daylong proceedings after hearing submissions from a battery of lawyers, including Solicitor General Tushar Mehta for the Centre and the NTA, and senior advocates Narender Hooda, Sanjay Hegde, and Mathews Nedumpara.
